Buying your first home is an exciting experience, and the beginning to a new chapter of your life. However, it can also be challenging. Here are some common mistakes to avoid when picking out your dream home!

  1. Asking an agent to begin showing you houses before you are pre-approved.

Although you may be excited to begin the process, you may be disappointed once you find out that not much can be done in the process until you have a pre-approval letter. Sellers may not consider your offer, and the housing market is hot, so you’ll want to be ready to put one down!

  1. Passing on a house over a small appearance mishap.

There is no such thing as the perfect house (usually). But, we can make a house perfect! If you are deciding to walk away due to something small, such as the paint color on a door, try to envision the house with a door you’d like. These things can be easily fixed.

  1. Assuming once your offer is accepted, the deal is done.

We all wish it worked this way, but, unfortunately, the process can feel a bit tedious. Thankfully, you will have your agent by your side to help you through it and work out the kinks. They’ve seen it all.

  1. Making a big purchase right before closing.

This is a great tip for beginners. The buyer (you) may no longer qualify for the mortgage when the lender does their last-minute check. So, hold off on that washer and dryer set until the deal is done!

  1. Working with an agent who doesn’t genuinely care about you.

Real estate is stressful. Buying a house is stressful. Selling a house is stressful. To make it through the process, it is very important to have an agent by your side who is empathetic, understanding, and hard-working. Overall, this should be an exciting process, and we are here to help you make the best decision for you!
